Chapter 8

Ries breathed a sigh of relief when his pilot finally informed him that they had left the Mandakan System. He went to check on their guest. He found that the Talondarian prince was still unconscious in the room that Punjor had placed him in. He was turning to leave when he saw Jerboxh walking down the corridor toward him, his tail swiping back and forth as if it wanted to slice the walls in two.

“Return to the bridge,” Ries said sternly.

The pilot just kept walking toward him, a scowl on his face. “Are you a lunatic, or just incredibly stupid!”

Ries was surprised by the vehemence. “What did you say to me?”

“I guess it’s the latter, then,” Jerboxh said, stopping in front of him. “What do you think is going to happen when the Talondarian King discovers that his son has gone missing?”

“It’s not your concern,” Ries said coldly, turning away from him.

Jerboxh reached a hand over and grasped Ries’s lower left arm, his claws digging painfully into the forearm. “Don’t you dare turn away from me,” he hissed.

“Who do you think you are, Pilot?” Ries asked, beginning to really grow angry.

“I’m the GI agent assigned to watch you and make sure you don’t do anything abnormally stupid,” Jerboxh said. “Obviously, I’ve failed in that task.”

Ries stopped a moment, wondering if he was telling the truth. Would GI have sent someone to watch him? After thinking another moment, he realized that he shouldn’t have been surprised. They wouldn’t just trust him again after the agent who recruited him turned out to have his own objectives. “Then why tell me?”

“Because we’re both going to be dead very soon,” Jerboxh exclaimed loudly. “It probably doesn’t matter if you know, at this point.”

“Don’t be so dramatic,” Ries said. “All they know is that he’s disappeared. They’ll have no leads. The Carterfan knows what he’s doing.”

“You’re referring to Zazzil, I assume?” Jerboxh asked. “You’re trusting our fate to a major crime lord? That’s just great. Did it ever occur to you that he might be setting you up? You’re a scapegoat if the king ever finds out where his son went missing.”

“Let me worry about Zazzil,” Ries said. “I haven’t lived this long by trusting everyone, especially, as you say, major crime lords. I have the situation under control.” He acted as calm as possible, but he knew Zazzil wasn’t above this kind of treachery.

Just then, an alarm began to sound. For a moment, Ries thought it was a proximity alarm. Then it dawned on him what it actually was: the medical machine that he’d attached the prince to after they’d placed him on the ship. The alarm meant that the Talondarian’s heart had stopped.

Belani wasn’t sure how long he’d sat in the dark cell before someone came for him, but he felt that it couldn’t have been longer than a full day, at the most. Once again, the door opened, spilling light into his cell, except that this time it didn’t feel like
